Roof Construction

What to Consider in Roof Construction: Timber or Steel?

Roof Construction

Roof construction means building the part of a structure that needs to last the longest. A poorly built roof structure comes back over the years as sagging, cracks and leaks, and later repairs often cost more than the original investment. That is why the load-bearing system, roof pitch and cladding type should be assessed together before work begins.

Timber Roof or Steel Roof?

The first decision is timber roof or steel roof. A timber roof is an economical, warm-looking solution that is easy to work with on housing and villa projects. The timber must, however, be treated, dried and correctly sized; otherwise moisture and insects shorten its life. A steel roof comes into its own on wide-span commercial and industrial buildings. It spans further with lighter sections, does not rot, and because it is fabricated in the workshop it saves time on site; with proper corrosion protection it performs for many years.

Why Structural Calculations and Roof Pitch Matter

Whatever the material, the roof structure must be based on structural calculations. Local snow and wind loads, roof pitch, the weight of the cladding and any additional loads such as solar panels directly determine the section sizes. Pitch is not only about appearance: tiles generally need a steeper pitch, while trapezoidal sheet or standing seam systems suit lower pitches. When pitch and cladding don't match, drainage suffers and the risk of leaks rises.

Existing Roofs: Reinforce or Renew?

On existing buildings, roof reinforcement and roof renewal are the options. Where the structure shows deformation, rot or undersized members, rafters and purlins can be strengthened or supported with steel sections. If the structure has reached the end of its life, full renewal is the better investment. Either way, prices given without an on-site survey lead to surprise costs later. At ESR Group we survey every roof construction project first, then settle on the solution that fits the structural need and the budget.
